We’ve been warned many times over that the baby boomer generation is getting older. It is so ironic that when a baby arrives, parents are busy child-proofing their home. Yet, we have never even thought of protecting the elderly.

Here are great tips to help keep the older generation safe. Believe me, preventing them from getting injured will save you from a big headache. My 91 year old grandma fell from the stairs and broke her ankle. It was difficult to wheelchair her into the restroom and put her to bed.

strong>1) Install double railways along staircases so that they may assist the elderly going up and down.

strong>2) Make sure that you clear out the floors and hallways of your home. They can be cluttered with hazards such as electrical cords, toys, slippery rugs or other items.

3) The older generation has a decreased sense of vision. Make it up to them by installing extra lighting in your home.

4) Install safety bars or a bench in the bathtub. The ideal scenario would be to have both types.

5) Be sure that the temperature setting of the water heater is lower. You will prevent scalding from hot water because many elderly people have a decreased sense of touch and will not realize that they are getting burned.

By using these 5 guidelines, you can prevent the elderly from getting injured. An ounce of prevention goes a long way for them. That way, you can save yourself from the big headache that comes with caring for the elderly.
